Taking your bike on the night train

Which trains carry bicycles, what a bike space costs and how to reserve one.

Not every night train carries bikes

European Sleeper and several Nightjet services carry bicycles in a dedicated bike section. Capacity is small — often fewer than twenty spaces per train.

On routes with a change you must reserve a bike space on each train; the night train may have space while the connecting day train does not.

Reserving and cost

Reserve the bike space when booking your ticket, not afterwards at the counter. Expect roughly 10 to 30 euro per journey.

Bike spaces often sell out before berths, especially in summer. Book them the moment sales open.

Folding bikes and e-bikes

A folded bike in a cover counts as hand luggage with most operators and needs no reservation.

E-bikes with a fixed battery are usually accepted as normal bikes; loose lithium batteries above a certain capacity may be banned. Check with the operator first.

On board

You load the bike into the rack yourself and take panniers to your compartment. Remove valuable accessories and the bike computer.

Allow ten to fifteen extra minutes on the platform: boarding with a bike is slower and the bike car is often at one end of the train.
