Sleeping comfort on the night train

Seat, couchette or sleeper? An honest comparison of price, privacy and a good night's rest.

Seat

The cheapest way to travel. You sit in a reclining seat, usually in a compartment of six or in an open carriage. Bedding is not included and sleep is limited.

Suited to short nights, younger travellers and anyone focused on price.

Couchette

A compartment with four or six berths, including sheet, pillow and blanket. You share the space with fellow travellers unless you book the whole compartment.

Many operators offer compartments reserved for women only. For most travellers this is the best balance of price and comfort.

Sleeping car

A private compartment for one to three people with real beds, a washbasin and sometimes a private shower and toilet. Breakfast is usually included.

Suited to long routes, arriving rested and travellers who value privacy.

What else to consider

Compartments above the bogies are slightly noisier. A berth in the middle of the carriage rides more smoothly.

Bring earplugs, an eye mask and a bottle of water. Even in a sleeping car the heating can be hard to control.
